Big Bang Master Art Post

BIG  BANG
ART MASTER POST

I?  Am insane!  Ha!

At least that's what I told myself a few times over the past several weeks when I was grumbling under my breath at some particularly difficult aspect of one of these drawings.

The other line I found myself paraphrasing is the one from The Prophet Chuck.  He said, "Writing is hard!"  I found myself grumbling, "Drawing is hard too!"

HOWEVER...

I had a BLAST doing this, despite what my husband may report about my grumbling.  I'm so glad I jumped at the very last moment to sign up to do art for Big Bang.  I emailed Wendy on the last day possible I believe.  I had no real idea what was involved, but it wasn't like I didn't have time on my hands.  Right?  If you're interested in my notes about the process, click here.

I'm amazed at the ease with which Wendy (and others? forgive me in my ignorance if there are others) organizes and runs this thing.  The scale of this is amazing and she does it with such grace and ease.

I was so very lucky that there was a great story still available for art at the last minute.  I'm a real sucker for schmoopy, angsty, first-time J2.  And quantrail's terrific story was so easy to dream up drawings for.  Plus she was great to work with as well.  It's her first time doing Big Bang too, so we were newbies together.  Which took some self-imagined pressure off me.

Below is the summary of quantrail's wonderful story and the art I did for it.  Some of the artwork is spoilery so if that bothers you, read the story first.

Title: The Last Smile I Fake
Author:  [info]quantrail
Artist:  [info]growyourwings
Pairing:
Jared/Sandy, eventual Jared/Jensen
Rating: PG-13 for language and references to sex
Summary:
Jensen and Jared have been friends since they were five years old. Jensen made the mistake of falling in love with an oblivious Jared during high school while Jared only had eyes for the popular Sandy McCoy. It's been five years since high school ended and Sandy has recently moved back to town from Dallas. After sacrificing all of his dreams to stay in town with Jared, Jensen finds that three's a crowd when Sandy takes an interest in Jared. Jensen must now decide between staying in Texas with Jared or at long last following his dreams to New York.
Disclaimer:  The characters in the artwork all belong to their creators, not to me.  No profit is being made and no harm is intended.

Warning:  Some of the artwork in this post is spoilery for the story.  Read the story first if that is of concern to you!

Wow, this all looks really amazing! Thank you so much! =D

I really, really love the one of them as kids. ♥

Thanks.

Yeah--that one is my favorite. It's the first one I did and then one I worked the least on! I like the looser style of it.

Beautiful!!! Omg, I am in LOVE with the Harley and Sadie ones -- what a fabulous idea! :)

I swear I could NOT walk away from drawing Harley. His face is almost as amazing as Jared's. I wanted a Harley icon and then I realized I could do an OTP of the both of them!

ETA: darnit I am SO lazy. I never change my icon even though I have like 100 of them. So I cannot REMEMBER to use one of my bigbang icons for these comments....

These are amazing! wow! I draw and paint myself, and when I see things like this I just wish I had that talent! I am at that point that I can draw really good from a picture if I use a grid to help, but no way I can do free hand (well, almost no way) and I am hopeless at coloring it. I am a bit better with painting nature though. So when I see things like this I can just stare!!!! wonderful art!

just - wow!
growyourwings: BigBang Adults[info]growyourwings on July 11th, 2009 06:25 pm (UTC)
Thanks! I wouldn't judge yourself so fiercely about using a grid. I double check all my work against reference photos and if I'm really stuck I use a grid-type process myself.

I especially needed to use my dbl-check process on one of the Jensen pictures in these pieces. I finally gave up trying to figure out "by myself" and did a minute comparison against the reference photo for his nose. I finally figured out what was off by doing that and it was only a hairs-length move of his right nostral line that made the difference. I'm not sure I would have found that without that kinda of comparison. That's what I was referring to in my comments about how freaking hard it is for me to draw Jensen.

From what I understand, even the "masters" used grids when needed. Plus the more you use grids, the more you train your eye to hand coordination and will be able to work a little less "grid-less" the next time.

I really appreciate your comments, thanks!

I just checked out your profile. You're from Norway!

My father was Norwegian. Born in the USA, but both his parents were born in Norway and immigrated here in the 1920s as young adults. My grandfather was from Mandal and my grandmother was from Vestfold.

Do you mind if I friend you?

BflyW[info]bflyw on July 11th, 2009 08:40 pm (UTC)
Please friend me, I'll friend you right back. I just warn you though... I write a lot of 'crap' on my LJ (locked) so one I friend you, you are gonna see all my venting!
growyourwings[info]growyourwings on July 11th, 2009 08:41 pm (UTC)
Ha! No problem with the venting. I think we all do it. I tend to ramble on myself sometimes.
BflyW[info]bflyw on July 11th, 2009 08:51 pm (UTC)
Go Norway!
Well, half the Norwegian population emigrated to USA between 1860 and 1920 so there is a lot of Norwegians in th US. :-)
Have you ever been to Norway?
The Mandal dialect is so nice!!!
growyourwings[info]growyourwings on July 11th, 2009 09:12 pm (UTC)
No I'm ashamed to say I haven't been to Norway. I did spend a week in Stockhom in the late 80s late 70s (sheesh, my time memory just fails me sometimes). I was visiting a good friend there. I was on a summer study program in Germany that summer and only had a week off and had to pick and choose where to go. I picked Sweden because of my friend.

"Half" the Norwegian population! Wow! Yeah, I grew up on the East Coast of the US (I live in Oregon in the West now,) and all the family we hung out with were Norges (as we called them.) My father was an only child and has been gone now for 22 years and my grandparents both passed a while ago as well. So all my immediate ties are kinda gone now. But anything Norwegian just kinda owns my heart a bit.

Stockholm is a beautiful city! I spent a weekend there in April :-)

Do you read CSI Nick/Greg fanfics? I have quite a few that explore Greg's Norwegian heriatage.
growyourwings[info]growyourwings on July 11th, 2009 09:21 pm (UTC)
No I haven't read any CSI fics. I guess because I haven't seen CSI yet! I tend to be a one-show woman! Mostly because when I love a show I tend to dive in head-first and immerse myself and don't have a lot of time for other shows.

Although during SPN I've also been very into the new BSG and Boston Legal. Now that both of those are over, I'm kinda shopping around for maybe one or two "new" shows. I think Leverage is going to be one of those. I've seen one episode and what with the filming in my town and Chris Kane and Steve Carlson doing gigs here now, I feel like I kinda need to watch the show. Luckily it looks like it's a good one.

I've had other people recommend CSI to me. I keep meaning to get into it. One of the characters has a Norge background huh?

BflyW: fic: 17mai[info]bflyw on July 11th, 2009 09:25 pm (UTC)
Definitely! Greg mention that his grandparents are Norwegian, so I have kind of made it my businiss to write good fics about his background. (*points to icon*)

I have been CSI fan for years, but have switced to SPN. I didn't watch SPN until October, but have caught up! I love DVD boxes! lol
